Why We Love Spirit!

Rosalie Wasson - Volunteer

I'll begin by telling the story of meeting Strawberry, a therapy horse, for the first time. It was love at first sight. You see, on my way to SPIRIT that first day, I asked God to show me a sign if this is something I'm supposed to be doing. When I walked into her stall and saw the "heart" brand on her shoulder, which meant she was originally from a ranch in Southern California in the same town where I had just moved from. This was God's sign to me that I was doing the right thing.

So for the past 3 years I've been cleaning stalls, grooming horses and helping with therapy lessons. It's hard to express the deep satisfaction and feeling of total peace while I'm there, not to mention the camaraderie and many friendships I have formed.

Yes, I came for the horses, but the children that come for therapy sessions crept into my heart as well. When I see the smile appear on their faces the moment they get on the horse or when I hear a "go" from a child that has a hard time communicating with words, my heart bursts with joy. When I see the parents looking for a sign of improvement and they see it, I know this is where I'm meant to be and I love every moment of it.

I'm sorry to report that "Strawberry" passed away on February 15, 2010 and I've written this poem in remembrance of her.

Strawberry sweet Strawberry it was love at first sight
For when I came to "SPIRIT" it was you who came to light
When I saw your "heart" on your shoulder I knew
Yes, this is what God is telling me to do
You patiently waited for me to take the lead
As we partnered to give therapy to those with special need
You gave each rider such love and devotion
And helped them with your body's motion
A slight movement from them and you'd stop
Making sure that they were safe from a flop
You did a great service while you were here
Your memory dear Strawberry I'll keep ever near
